Changing your hair color without damage

Filed under: Generally Hair,Hair How To's,Product Reviews — by Courtney Smith @ 8:23 pm

Women are characters of change..so many of us like to alter our hair color. Well when doing so, you can damage your hair to point of no return. Especially if you have relaxed hair, you must be very careful to care for your color-treated hair. But there is a way to color your hair without the mess of henna and without the worries of chemical box colors such as Bigen and Clairol Natural Instincts. This solution is called a rinse! It is a temporary hair color that is applied as much as the user wants. I strongly suggest Colorshowers Color Rinse, a dominican rinse that can be found at the following link:

Colorshowers Dominican Hair Rinses

I have used Jazzing and Clairol Beautiful and they do not take AT ALL even when using heat and leaving the color on for an extended amount of time. I use Colorshowers in Black and although it costs 20 dollars a bottle, it lasts about a year with prolonged use. This is the method that I take to ensure I have maximum color coverage from Colorshowers:

1. Clarify hair with shampoo: Nexxus Aloe Rid or Organic Root Stimulator Aloe. Then shampoo with moisturizing shampoo: Creme of Nature Dry/Damaged.
2. Apply quickie conditioner then do a rinse with heavily diluted Apple cider vinegar to balance pH out.
3. Apply colorshowers liberally to the hair and put a plastic cap over the hair. Sit underneath a dryer for 20 minutes on high then 10 minutes on medium. Then sit for 20 minutes out of the dryer.
4. Rinse out colorshowers and deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner. I like to use Proclaim Aloe&Shea moisturizing conditioner. Avoid anything with extra virgin olive oil because this will strip your color out. Deep condition for an hour without heat.
5. Rinse out the deep conditioner and style your hair. Your hair should be nicely colored!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Lush reincarnate Solid Shampoo

Filed under: Generally Hair,Product Reviews — by Courtney Smith @ 1:00 am

Name – LUSH Reincarnate Solid Shampoo

Description – Bring your sad scalp and fading dark hair color back to life! Reincarnate combines the scalp treatment of Rhassoul mud from the Moroccan Atlas mountains with Persian red henna to revitalize your color, plus sedra powder for gloss and condition. It smells like incense wafting from an Eastern temple through the surrounding spice market.

Ingredients – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearic Acid, Red Henna (Lawsonia inermis), Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Rosemary Infusion (Rosmarinus officinalis), Fleeceflower Root Infusion (Polygonum multiflorum), Nettle Leaf Infusion (Urtica dioica), Cocamide DEA, Soya Lecithin, Rhassoul Mud, Labdanum Resinoid (Cistus labdanum), Sedra Powder, Orange Oil (Citrus dulcis), Irish Moss Powder (Chondrus crispus), Perfume.

Instructions
– Wet hair and the shampoo bar. Glide down the length of your hair about three times (right, left and back). You may need additional swipes depending on hair volume. Work into a lather and rinse thoroughly. Follow with LUSH conditioner. Keep your solid shampoo in a cool, dry place between uses.

How I used it – I prepooed with VO5 strawberries & creme mixed with honey, coconut oil, and castor oil for about 30 minutes. Then i shampooed with the solid shampoo once lathering it between my hands and rubbing the lather on my scalp AND length. Then i shamped with my trusty rosemary aloe bar.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Baking Soda

Filed under: Product Reviews — by Courtney Smith @ 7:40 pm

Name – Baking Soda

Description – N/A

Ingredients – Sodium bicarbonate (for the chemists i believe the formula is NaCO3..correct me if i’m wrong.. this is pure baking soda.

Instructions
– N/A

How I used it – I mixed 1/2 teaspoon-1 teaspoon of baking soda in 500 mL of distilled water and a few squirts of my VO5 Kiwi Lime Clarifying Conditioner to balance the alkalinity of the baking soda. I rinsed 3 times with this mixture and each successive time my hair got softer and softer. This is a GREAT alternative to shampoo for those that get dry hair from using sulfate+ammonia shampoos. I don’t see any down to using baking soda to clarify 🙂

VO5 Kiwi Lime Clarifying Conditioner

Filed under: Product Reviews — by Courtney Smith @ 7:33 pm

Name – VO5 Kiwi Lime Clarifying Conditioner

Description -Give yourself a squeeze with the fresh fragrance of sweet kiwis and tangy limes. Clarifying formula with rosemary and lemongrass extracts rinses clean. Helps to remove build-up. Safe for all hair types.

Ingredients – Water; Cetyl Alcohol; Stearyl Alcohol; Stearalkonium Chloride; Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract; Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract; Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Extract; Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Fruit Extract; Hydrolyzed Collagen; Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D); Steareth-21; Glyceryl Stearate; Benzophenone-4; Corn Oil; Propylene Glycol; Disodium EDTA; DMDM Hydantoin; Fragrance; Blue 1; Yellow 5.

Instructions – After shampooing, apply to wet hair and leave on for one minute. Rinse thoroughly.

How I used it – I applied the conditioner to wet hair as a quick rinse. I left it on for maybe a minute and then rinsed it out underneath the shower and combed. It left my hair really soft and there was so much slip! I was surprised that my hair liked this conditioner because it hates mostly everything citrusy. After i airdryed, my hair was very soft, BUT very clean. This is a staple co wash conditioner because it cleans my hair while adding moisture and strength. But you have to be careful not to overdo this conditioner because it contains Hydrolzed Collagen protein, which can lead to protein overload.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Elasta QP DPR-11

Filed under: Product Reviews — by Courtney Smith @ 8:28 pm

Name – Elasta QP Deep Penetrating Remoisturizer-11

Description

  • Contains 11 conditioning botanicals including Peach Blossom Oil and Vitamin E
  • Penetrates inner hair fibers to surge nutrients to moisture depleted hair
  • Perfect hair repair treatment when combined with Elasta QP Protein Supplement

Ingredients – Chamomille, Nettle, Balm Mint Leaf Oil, Coltsfoot Extract, Horse Chestnut Extract, Sage Leaf Extract, Rosemary Extract, Petroleum, Cetyel Alcohol, Cetromonium Chloride, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Laurus Nobblis Oil, Orange Oil, Neroli Oil, Black Currant Seed Oil.

Instructions – Apply to hair. Comb through. Place client with plastic cap under warm dryer for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and proceed with styling. For extremely damaged, over-processed, or breaking hair, follow procedure above, and process for 25 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

How I used it – I mixed it with some coconut milk, coconut oil, olive oil, and honey then let it sit on my hair under a shower cap for about an hour. Rinsed it out and my hair was verrry soft! The only down was the coconut milk smell but that had nothing to do with the Elasta QP. It didn’t add much slip, but added a softness like no other! When i airdryed my hair, my new growth was totally soft! I will totally buy again!
Also, you should not use a lot of the DPR11 unless you want weighed down hair and it gets kind of hard to rinse out if you use too much. Use sparingly!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Porosity Control Conditioner

Filed under: Product Reviews — by Courtney Smith @ 7:26 pm

Name – Roux Porosity Control Conditioner

Description
Controls perm, color and relaxer results. Use before a chemical service to prevent chemical shock, to equalize hair porosity and ensure predictable results.

Moisturizes, detangles, lusterizes. Helps create more uniform color, perm and relaxer results. Leaves hair natural looking, vibrant and manageable.

Ingredients – coming soon =D

Instructions – Porosity Control Conditioner: Step 1 in the triple protection haircare system. Use before a chemical service to prevent chemical shock, to equalize hair’s porosity and ensure predictable results. Moisturizes, detangles and lusterizes.

How I used it – I used the Porosity Control after shampooing with Garnier Fructis for Dry/Damaged Hair and NTM. I put it on my hair for about 5-10 minutes under a shower cap while washing regularly in the shower.
My verdict – After washing the conditioner out, my hair was SOFT and sooo easy to comb through. At that time I was about 12 weeks post and I had been having trouble combing through my hair. But with the Porosity Control, I had no such problems! I highly recommend this!! The consistency is really watery but it’s so nice!
The only down to Porosity Control is the price. It costs about 9 dollars for 16 ounces. I won’t repurchase it because I am trying to shy away from a lot of silicones, but this is recommended for anyone who has tangle problems or porous hair.
